Texas Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett expressed her belief that President Donald Trump is unlikely to “cancel” the upcoming midterm elections. During a YouTube live stream on Tuesday, she responded to a viewer’s query about whether he could actually postpone the elections, a topic that’s been floated by some Democratic commentators.
“I think it really depends on how we define ‘cancelled,'” Crockett remarked, pondering the implications of such a move. She emphasized that elections are primarily governed at the state and local levels, but noted that Trump often operates in ways that evade checks and balances.
While her comments did not directly suggest that Trump would outright cancel the elections, she warned about potential “election interference.” Crockett predicted a scenario rife with manipulation, stating, “I expect to see a lot of election interference, including dubious lawsuits and intimidation at polling places.” However, she added, “I don’t foresee a ‘cancellation’ of the midterm elections.”
Continuing, she remarked on Trump’s past actions, recalling that he once labeled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a dictator for holding no elections during a war. Crockett speculated that Trump might try to frame a situation as an “invasion” to justify canceling the election, but felt that he was more likely to opt for interference instead.
“If it were to be cancelled, it would probably be under the pretext of an ‘invasion attack,'” she explained. “But realistically, I think he’ll rely more on interference because getting enough cooperation from governors to stop the elections seems unlikely.”
Previously, Crockett has accused Republicans of trying to undermine moderate candidates in the primaries. While some liberal voices have made alarming predictions about Trump’s intentions regarding the midterms, mainstream Democratic politicians have focused more on the idea of potential cheating or interference rather than outright cancellation.
