A Mercedes-Benz driver was caught on video making an illegal turn, colliding with a cyclist, and then fleeing the scene.
The footage, initially shared by KRON4, shows a black Mercedes suddenly cutting into traffic and into the bike lane where the cyclist was riding.
This incident took place near 8th Avenue and Mission Street in San Francisco, where it seems the driver made a right turn against a red light, right into the cyclist’s path.
The video, recorded by another cyclist, captures the victim desperately braking to avoid the impact but ultimately colliding with the vehicle that veered into his lane.
Instead of stopping, the driver sped off, weaving through traffic and leaving the scene behind.
The cyclist who recorded the event later got into his car to check on the victim, and it appears both cyclists escaped without severe injuries, as seen in the footage.
If you glance closely at the video, you can spot the driver—a man with a short white beard wearing a hat and dark sunglasses.
As of Wednesday, San Francisco police officials indicated no reports had been filed regarding the incident.
California law requires drivers involved in accidents to halt immediately, share their identification, and report any incidents causing injury or property damage.
Typically, a hit-and-run involving only property damage is considered a misdemeanor, which could lead to up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. However, cases involving bodily injury or death are more serious—they’re regarded as felonies, possibly resulting in two to four years in prison and fines that could reach up to $10,000.
