Sheriff Takes Legal Action Against Man Over False ICE Detention Claims
A sheriff in Wisconsin is taking steps against a man accused of falsely claiming he was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for 40 hours.
Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt has announced charges against Sundas Naqvi from Skokie, Illinois. Authorities believe he was in custody of federal officials in both Illinois and Wisconsin following a lengthy investigation.
In a social media update, the sheriff’s office denied the claims of false detention, providing a timeline and supporting evidence.
“After thoroughly reviewing available records and evidence, we’ve concluded that the allegations do not align with the facts and are untrue,” the department stated.
Naqvi, a U.S. citizen, was initially detained at O’Hare International Airport, then moved to a detention center in Illinois, and later transferred to Dodge County, Wisconsin, where he was held before being released. He had alleged that Dodge County officials denied his presence while he was in custody and let him go without proper documentation.
The sheriff’s office clarified that the county had no involvement and that they have no records of any bookings or detentions related to Naqvi. They emphasized that no transfers or arrangements were made with any federal or out-of-state agencies concerning him.
Records from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) support the events of March 5, which is noted as significant due to Naqvi’s actions that day. Shortly after filing a $1 million defamation lawsuit, a judge approved his request for an expedited subpoena to access evidence from his cell phone.
Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison also stated that Naqvi and others were allegedly transported across state lines by immigration officials.
In a press conference, Sheriff Schmidt mentioned that Naqvi had been checking into the Hampton Inn and Suites in Rosemont, Illinois throughout the period in question. He provided hotel bills and text message receipts as evidence of Naqvi’s activities, noting that he even enjoyed meals and spa services during his stay.
“I mean, I haven’t heard of any spa in Broadview, Chicago, Illinois,” Schmidt said, noting the discrepancy. “And we certainly don’t have spa personnel here at the Dodge County Jail.”
Reports indicate that Naqvi’s story has been labeled a media hoax, contradicting his claims about being detained. It looks like the narrative around this situation has taken quite a turn.
