Surprise Appearance at Euroleague Game
Fans at the Movistar Arena in Madrid experienced an unexpected treat during a Euroleague basketball match on Thursday. Luka Doncic, the star of the Los Angeles Lakers, was spotted courtside with tennis legend Novak Djokovic, who is often celebrated as the greatest male tennis player of all time. Their presence prompted a loud standing ovation from the audience.
Attending the game to see Real Madrid take on Red Star Belgrade, Doncic’s appearance was particularly special. For those in attendance, it was reminiscent of the excitement felt when Michael Jordan shows up at a UNC basketball event, given Doncic’s history with Real Madrid during his teenage years.
Sadly, Doncic has been sidelined due to a Grade 2 hamstring injury he sustained back in early April while playing in Oklahoma City. He traveled to Spain for treatment and plans to return to Los Angeles on Friday, right before the Lakers face the Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs.
In a bit of good news, the NBA announced on Thursday that they had accepted Doncic’s request for an “extraordinary circumstances challenge,” which allows him to be considered for postseason awards despite having played only 64 games this season, missing the standard 65-game minimum due to injury and personal matters, including the birth of his child in Slovenia. This ruling will allow him to be eligible for accolades like the MVP and All-NBA teams.
Following the NBA’s announcement, Doncic shared his thoughts on social media platforms. Notably, Doncic and Djokovic share a close friendship, with Djokovic having previously traveled to Los Angeles to support Doncic at a game. He even joined in the celebrations for Doncic’s birthday the same evening.
