Lawmakers respond to Rep Eric Swalwell stepping down due to misconduct allegations

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have expressed both outrage and concern over Rep. Eric Swalwell’s lengthy tenure in office, lasting 16 years, during which he managed to build a significant national presence and even spearhead a gubernatorial campaign, all while allegedly concealing sexual misconduct claims that ultimately led to his resignation this week.

“There must be a zero-tolerance policy in the Capitol regarding such behavior,” stated Representative Sarah McBride from Delaware. “I’m relieved he resigned. It was necessary. My heart goes out to the victims, to the women who bravely came forward, and I’m appalled by what he did.”

These sentiments were shared by Texas Republican Rep. Beth Van Duyne, who remarked that Swalwell’s actions crossed a definitive line.

“This is very clear: Don’t engage in relationships with your staff. Don’t sexually harass employees. And please, don’t commit sexual assault. It’s not a hard guideline to follow,” Van Duyne asserted.

As discussions unfold on Capitol Hill about preventing future incidents, a recent CNN and San Francisco Chronicle report revealed troubling accounts from multiple victims detailing Swalwell’s inappropriate advances towards intoxicated women, coercing employees into compromising situations, and soliciting explicit messages.

Following this distressing report, Swalwell announced on Sunday that he would withdraw from the gubernatorial race in California. The following day, he declared his resignation from Congress.

Rep. Joaquin Castro from Texas expressed confusion over how Swalwell managed to keep his actions under wraps despite his reputation for pushing limits. “It’s disappointing and shameful. People have mentioned there were rumors, but…” Castro mused.

He added that, in the political arena, interactions often lack genuine intention. “Here, people typically don’t engage with one another unless there’s a specific reason,” Castro explained. He emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of openness among congressional offices. “It’s vital for individuals to feel they can approach female representatives like myself,” Rep. Debbie Dingell, from Michigan, chimed in, adding, “If Nancy Pelosi had any inkling, she would have swiftly intervened.”

Despite stepping down, Swalwell continues to deny the accusations against him, calling them “false, fabricated, and deeply offensive.” His attorney, Sarah Azari, characterized the timing and nature of the allegations as politically motivated attempts to harm his long-standing public image.

Responses from various lawmakers indicate that the timing of such allegations should not furtively discredit their validity. “It’s regrettable when these matters surface, yet true allegations should be addressed regardless of timing,” noted Alabama Representative Shomali Figures.

After Swalwell’s resignation, California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed plans for a special election to fill the now-vacant congressional seat, set for August 18th, following a primary election on June 16th.
