Danny Danon on Hezbollah and the Lebanese Government
Danny Danon, Israel’s representative at the United Nations, stated during a segment on FOX News Channel’s “American Report” that the Israel Defense Forces are the only entity capable of dismantling Hezbollah. He emphasized that the Lebanese government lacks full control over Lebanon.
Danon mentioned that the Lebanese government struggles with Hezbollah and doesn’t fully engage with its citizens. He acknowledged a shared objective: both Israelis and Lebanese aim to remove Hezbollah from Lebanon. He noted that a ceasefire is set to start at 5 PM ET and expressed hope for ongoing conversations with the Lebanese populace. Yet, he remained realistic about the Lebanese government’s limited authority over the country, expressing a desire for it to gain the strength needed to assert control.
Co-host John Roberts reflected on historical events, recalling how Israel successfully pressured Lebanon to exile the PLO in 1982. He pointed out that Hezbollah presents a different challenge now, suggesting that in any direct conflict, Hezbollah might emerge victorious over the Lebanese army. He then questioned how Lebanon could realistically dismantle Hezbollah and expel them from the country.
Danon agreed, reiterating that only the Israel Defense Forces can effectively dismantle Hezbollah, which has been Israel’s course of action. He noted the limitations of the Lebanese capabilities and recalled a ceasefire agreement signed with Lebanon in early 2024. According to this agreement, Lebanon was expected to venture into South Lebanon to eliminate Hezbollah forces. Danon urged caution regarding future agreements, yet he held onto hope that Lebanon could achieve independence and that Hezbollah and Iran would withdraw from the country.
