San Francisco’s Upcoming Treasure Hunt with Big Rewards

San Francisco is gearing up for an exciting treasure hunt that’s set to transform the city into a real-life adventure, complete with impressive prizes. Participants will have the chance to find rare coins valued at around $50,000.

As part of its third annual treasure hunt scheduled for April 25, Witter Coin, a coin shop established in 1960, will hide 10 valuable coins across the Marina District and other iconic neighborhoods. Among the prizes is a remarkable gold coin from the gold rush era, estimated to be worth $25,000.

Participants won’t need shovels or any digging tools. According to owner Seth Chandler, all hidden coins will be secured in known locations, meaning no trespassing is necessary.

The hunt operates under straightforward yet effective rules. Starting at 7 a.m. on the day of the event, clues will be shared every hour through the shop’s Instagram account. Each hint will guide hunters to one of the hidden coins.

This event aligns with National Coin Week, and while it’s designed to promote the business, Chandler emphasizes a deeper goal: to reconnect the city with its historical roots. He mentioned, “This city was built around the pursuit of gold. We wanted to create something that recaptures that spirit—something genuine, tangible, and deeply tied to San Francisco’s history.”

This treasure hunt has seen significant growth since it started in 2024, when there were only 11 coins worth between a few hundred dollars and $2,500 scattered throughout the city. The prize pool has dramatically expanded this year, showcasing rising interest and ambition.

Chandler has also embraced modern methods within the coin industry, utilizing social media and live auctions, which have reportedly boosted his annual revenue significantly.

He encourages everyone to participate in this unique adventure by stating, “Don’t be a spectator, be a prospector.” With the hunt taking place for just one day, excitement will build as the sun rises on that morning.
