A woman from Brooklyn was taken into custody after authorities discovered 20 animals, including a deceased dog, in distressing conditions within her apartment, the police reported.
Jessica Stiles, 45, faces multiple charges following the discovery of 27 abandoned animals in her residence on Herkimer Street in Ocean Hill on Wednesday, as indicated by the New York City Police Department and the ASPCA.
Just last week, a search warrant was executed at the location after complaints surfaced about the unfavorable living conditions and sounds of barking echoing from the troubled home.
Within the apartment, 22 dogs, four cats, and a pigeon were discovered housed in crates. Tragically, a dead puppy was also found in the disturbing environment.
The rescued animals were transported to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center in Manhattan and the organization’s rehabilitation facility in the Hudson Valley for necessary care, officials stated.
Many of the animals were discovered to be covered in urine and feces and infested with fleas. A number of puppies were underweight, while older ones faced untreated dental issues.
The pets will undergo additional medical and behavioral treatment as they recover, according to the animal rescuers.
Stiles is charged with one count of aggressive cruelty to animals and 27 counts related to torture, injury, and neglect of animals.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez commented, “Keeping animals in poor living conditions and failing to meet their needs is a crime. My office is committed to holding accountable those who are so indifferent in Brooklyn.”
He also expressed gratitude to those who reported the widespread abuse allegations and to the ASPCA for stepping in to rescue and rehabilitate the animals.
The ASPCA is set to continue its collaboration with the NYPD and the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office in the ongoing criminal investigation regarding the case.
The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office had not yet responded to requests for additional comments.
