Mitchell’s Future with the Cavaliers in Question
If the Cavaliers make a strong playoff push, Donovan Mitchell will likely play a crucial role. But, to be honest, his long-term stay in Cleveland isn’t exactly assured right now.
As it stands, Mitchell is set to be a free agent after the next season. This offseason, he’s eligible for an extension. However, if he chooses not to sign, the Cavaliers hinted they might “discuss the possibility of moving him,” according to an unnamed source.
Interestingly, there doesn’t seem to be any indication that Mitchell wants to leave. That said, the ongoing contract situation is a bit tricky. He’s poised to earn over $50 million next season, plus he has a player option for the 2027-28 season that he might just exercise.
This season, he’s averaging 27.9 points per game, which is impressive—his best since the 2022-23 season. However, by declining an extension, there’s a risk the franchise could lose their star player without getting anything in return.
Mitchell recently made his seventh consecutive All-Star appearance and has been pivotal in helping the Cavaliers secure the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference after the team added James Harden before the trade deadline.
When asked about what this postseason means to him, Mitchell shared that it represents “the world.” He emphasized, “This is a great opportunity. And it’s on us in this locker room to perform at our best.” It’s clear that he feels ready to give it his all, stating that this is what they train for and why they work so hard.
The Cavaliers are set to begin their postseason journey against the Raptors. However, as the playoffs progress, questions about Mitchell’s future will likely linger, especially considering recent team changes, including trading Darius Garland to the Rockets for Harden.
Mitchell, the former No. 13 overall pick, has spent the last four seasons in Cleveland after his trade from the Jazz.
