Georgia Navy veteran Olaolukitan Adon Abel 'got into a dispute with his roommate' prior to the shooting incident

Atlanta Area Shooting Incident Involving Navy Veteran

A U.S. Navy veteran is facing serious charges after allegedly killing two people and injuring another in a series of attacks in the Atlanta region. This all seems to have escalated from a heated argument about the air conditioning in his apartment, according to his roommate.

As of now, authorities haven’t shared any motive for the incident that occurred early Monday morning. It’s reported that one of the victims was a Department of Homeland Security inspector general who was simply walking his dog near the suspect’s residence.

The suspect, Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old originally from the United Kingdom, has been charged in state court in DeKalb County with malicious murder, aggravated assault, and firearm offenses.

In addition to the state charges, he also faces federal firearms violations alongside another individual who allegedly purchased the gun used in these attacks, as prosecutors revealed on Friday.

Living in a communal housing setup, Adon Abel shared space with several others in a house listed on PadSplit, a site emphasizing affordable shared living. He became a U.S. citizen in 2022 while stationed in San Diego.

Roommates shared with The Associated Press that just before the violence erupted, there was a loud argument between Adon Abel and a male roomie about the home’s air conditioning system. This fight reportedly made the living situation quite tense.

One roommate, Angela Britton, noted that Adon Abel “froze the house” and the argument was not an isolated incident. It was a culmination of ongoing disputes over the AC.

The discomfort and fear in the household were palpable, as another roommate, Lakisha McKinzie, felt so threatened by the situation that she reached out to her mother for support and prayers regarding her safety. She had already been uneasy around Adon Abel after he made unwelcome advances last month.

Despite multiple complaints to their landlord—complaints which went unanswered—her fears continued to grow. After the argument that night, Adon Abel packed his things and left shortly after midnight.

Shortly after, a 31-year-old named Prianna Weathers was fatally shot outside a nearby fast-food restaurant. Then, in a separate incident hours later, a homeless man was shot while sleeping outside a grocery store. Both incidents took place just miles from each other.

Lauren Bliss, an employee of the DHS, was found several hours later with gunshot and stab wounds not far from Adon Abel’s home.

It’s still uncertain if he had any previous connection with the victims, but authorities believe at least one was a random target. Georgia State Patrol eventually apprehended Adon Abel around 11 a.m. on Monday, discovering ammunition in his vehicle that matched shell casings from the murder scene.

He is also facing federal charges related to gun possession due to prior criminal convictions, alongside allegations that another man helped him acquire the firearm illegally.

Amid these developments, Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin expressed concern over Adon Abel obtaining U.S. citizenship during the Biden administration, referencing previous charges against him, though it remains unclear if they happened before he gained citizenship.

In California, Abel had previously pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers, and in Georgia, a person with a similar name was also implicated in a series of sexual assault misdemeanors.

The details of this case illustrate a disturbing sequence of events, leaving many questions unanswered as investigators delve deeper into the troubling circumstances and influences surrounding these violent acts.
