A driver, suspected to be linked to a fatal shooting in Pomona, was apprehended Thursday night after a long pursuit that started in Castaic and ended in Lancaster. Authorities employed spike strips and a PIT maneuver to bring the chase to a conclusion.
This chase began hours following gunfire reported near Monterey and Gary streets in Pomona around 3:30 p.m.
Police confirmed one fatality from the incident. Earlier reports noted that at least two individuals were injured, though specifics about their conditions remain unclear.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) believes the suspect was driving a black Kia that the Pomona Police had been looking for in relation to the shooting.
CHP troopers later spotted a vehicle matching that description near Castaic Lake and attempted to pull it over.
However, the driver refused to stop, leading officers on a pursuit that reached speeds of 135 mph on the northbound 5 Freeway near Castaic.
At one point, the driver exited the highway and continued on local roads in the Castaic area before heading north on Lake Hughes Road, weaving through the Newhall region.
During the chase, the driver briefly left the roadway and was observed throwing several items from the car.
By around 6:15 p.m., they had entered a more remote area on Lake Hughes Road and made it into Lancaster about half an hour later.
Aerial footage showed numerous CHP units closely following the vehicle while officers looked for a safe moment to conclude the pursuit.
Shortly after 7 p.m., officers managed to set up spike strips on West Avenue K, which damaged at least two tires on the Kia, considerably slowing it down.
With few options left, CHP officers executed a PIT maneuver near the intersection of 20th Street West and West Street K, bringing the vehicle to a halt.
Video from the scene captured the driver exiting the Kia and surrendering as officers approached with their weapons drawn. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
The CHP confirmed that the driver was arrested at the scene. Further updates regarding the deadly shooting investigation and any potential charges were not immediately available.
