Minnesota Governor Critiques Trump at Progressive Conference in Barcelona

At a progressive event in Spain on Saturday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized President Donald Trump, calling him a “weak, trigger-happy president” with “no exit plan” for the conflict involving Iran. His remarks came during the Global Progressive Mobilization conference held in Barcelona, where attendees were also addressed via video by New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani about affordability issues and Senator Bernie Sanders, who discussed the “illegal and dangerous wars” waged in Iran and Lebanon.

“We have a weak, trigger-happy president who has plunged us into a war without any threat, purpose, or exit strategy. We need to call it what it is: fascism,” Walz declared. “It would be easy to stand here and criticize Trump—he’s an easy target. But, honestly, there are bigger issues at hand. Authoritarianism isn’t just a problem in the U.S.; it’s everywhere.”

Walz also made a seemingly playful comment: “Many of you know I’m not the current Vice President, and I regret that.” Adding, “I’m not here to lecture you or get into a spat with the Pope. Instead, I’m here to express my gratitude and share ideas for a progressive movement that can benefit all nations.”

During his speech, Walz urged the audience, “Please don’t lose hope in the American people. Yes, let’s hold that monster in the White House accountable, but don’t forget, there are good people who care about equality. It’s not America-first; it’s humanity-first.” He emphasized the importance of staying vocal and active in the fight for equality.

Earlier, Trump had criticized Spain on his platform, noting, “Has anyone seen how badly Spain is doing? It contributes almost nothing to NATO and its financial situation is terrible. Sad to see!”

The two-day Global Progressive Mobilization conference labels itself as an essential alternative to conservative and far-right forces.

In a related note, Begona Gómez, the wife of Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has been formally charged with corruption, charges both she and her husband deny.
