John Fogerty Reflects on His Life and Career
In a recent chat on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, John Fogerty, the iconic founder of Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), shared some heartfelt thoughts about his life, particularly focusing on the pivotal role his wife, Julie, has played in his recovery during a tumultuous time in his career.
The 80-year-old musician recounted a particularly challenging chapter in his life, characterized by a messy legal battle with his former record label over the rights to his songs. Fogerty candidly stated, “If I hadn’t met her, I probably would have died. It’s as simple as that.” He spoke about feeling trapped, relying too heavily on alcohol during a low point, and described an overwhelming sense of despair.
He elaborated on how individuals in similar situations might struggle, feeling somewhat out of sync with the rest of the world. “You can become kind of pitiful,” he remarked, reflecting on that dark period.
Fogerty mentioned his mindset when he met Julie while on tour in 1986. It was a time when he should have been ecstatic about his third solo album, Centerfield, yet he felt miserable and bitter, stuck in a cycle of self-destructive behavior.
Interestingly, his next album, Eye of the Zombie, didn’t achieve the same success, but his life began to change for the better once he formed a bond with Julie, who he described as his saving grace. He recalled, “Suddenly, I met Julie. I never thought I would meet the love of my life, the person destined to help me find joy again. Everything changed.” They married in April 1991 and have three children together: Shane, Tyler, and Kelsey.
As the creator behind some of CCR’s legendary tracks, including “Proud Mary” and “Bad Moon Rising,” Fogerty only regained the rights to his music in January 2023, after a long and arduous dispute with Fantasy Records. He expressed disbelief at finally owning his songs, saying, “This isn’t a 100 percent victory for me, but it’s certainly better than before.” He described it as a sort of rebirth, filled with renewed excitement for what’s to come in his music career.
Reflecting on the legal struggles with Fantasy Records, Fogerty recounted, “They even sued me for plagiarism…for looking like me.” At the heart of his passion is a desire to reclaim his artistry, and he continues to feel grateful for the opportunities ahead, especially with Julie by his side to celebrate these milestones.
It’s quite moving to see how personal relationships can profoundly influence one’s journey, especially for someone with Fogerty’s history and talent.
