Brady Tkachuk and Jordan Staal clash at the start of the NHL playoffs

The NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Kick Off

The NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs began dramatically on Saturday. Brady Tkachuk, known as a folk hero for Team USA, immediately engaged in a brawl with Carolina Hurricanes’ captain Jordan Staal right at the puck drop, marking his pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

It seems Tkachuk asked Staal if he was up for it when hitting the ice, and, well, the response was clearly affirmative.

Tkachuk landed a few punches, but Staal managed to deliver a significant hit that sent Tkachuk crashing to the ice. This isn’t an unusual start for Tkachuk; he had also thrown down the gloves in previous openers this season, including a fight with Anders Lee of the New York Islanders just last week.

Interestingly, Tkachuk garnered a lot of attention last year when he played for Team USA in the Four Nations, notably clashing with Canada’s Sam Bennett just moments after the puck drop. Bennett and Tkachuk’s brother, Matthew, are on the Florida Panthers—who, by the way, didn’t make the playoffs this year.

Tkachuk’s triumph came earlier in February when he celebrated winning an Olympic gold medal—marking a significant moment against Canada and breaking decades without a US gold medal in men’s ice hockey. It was a moment of triumph, the first of its kind since 1980, and a notable win over Canada in the knockout stage since the 1960 gold medal game.

Tkachuk’s Senators clinched a wild card spot in the playoffs, while the Hurricanes finished strong with 113 points this season—a notable achievement, especially in the Eastern Conference.
