Knicks defeat Hawks for a significant Game 1 playoff win

Knicks vs. Hawks: Game 1 Recap

It became clear that there was a talent mismatch, and the Knicks quickly took advantage of that.

The Hawks lived up to their reputation as a young, athletic, and confident team. Meanwhile, the Knicks had some issues to address.

Initially, their defense was lacking until they made a dramatic change in the second half.

Despite a shaky start, they managed to push the Hawks back and saw them struggle as the game progressed.

In Game 1 at Madison Square Garden, they trailed by nine points at halftime but surged in the second half, winning 113-102.

Still, the Knicks know how to keep the tension high. Atlanta led by 19 points with just over three minutes left, and they almost mounted a comeback with an 11-0 run.

Thankfully, the Knicks composed themselves and avoided catastrophe.

Jalen Brunson had a standout performance, scoring 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting in the first quarter and making all three of his 3-point attempts. Interestingly, he was the only Knick to play in the first quarter.

But perhaps the most telling moment came when Brunson sat at the beginning of the fourth quarter. His absence proved beneficial.

They outscored the Hawks by seven points, extending their lead to 16. However, Brunson added a late basket to secure control.

Though he excelled initially, Brunson ended the night with 28 points, shooting 1-of-11 after the first quarter.

The Knicks had an 11-point lead early on, but then faced a challenge as the Hawks pulled off a 19-8 run to tie the game. The teams were neck and neck by halftime, with the Hawks only trailing by two after a buzzer-beating shot.

After the break, the Knicks tightened their defense, limiting Atlanta to 8-of-23 shooting in the third quarter. That’s a crucial stat for New York; they excel in the fourth quarter, starting the game 46-2 up until that point.

Despite a slow start, Karl-Anthony Towns came alive in the second half, scoring 19 points after not getting on the board until late in the second quarter. His matchup with Onyeka Okongwu was tough, but Towns eventually finished with 25 points and 14 rebounds.

OG Anunoby contributed consistently throughout the game, adding 18 points and eight rebounds. He briefly left the game after twisting his left ankle but returned quickly.

Adjustments were needed in the second quarter; after a technical foul was called on CJ McCollum, Brunson appeared shaken for a moment.

While much has been said about the Hawks being a youthful team, it was McCollum, the experienced player, who caused the most damage, scoring 26 points while Brunson was his primary defender. Jalen Johnson chipped in with 23 points for Atlanta.

As the Hawks resorted to fouling Mitchell Robinson late in the game, the Knicks began to regain control.

The matchup was intense, with both teams testing each other. Yet, ultimately, the Knicks had their responses ready.
