Harmeet Dhillon from the DOJ Explains the Significant Issues with Voter Rolls

Voting Eligibility Concerns Identified

Harmeet Dhillon, the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, shared with Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures” that federal investigators have uncovered tens of thousands of deceased individuals and non-citizens listed on voting rolls.

The Trump administration has initiated legal action against several states for not submitting their voter rolls to the Justice Department, which aims to enforce various laws, including the National Voter Registration Act and the Help America Vote Act, designed to safeguard voting rights. Dhillon noted that errors related to voting eligibility continue to emerge, even in states making an effort to adhere to the law.

“States aren’t compliant, even when they intend to be. Out of the 60 million records we’ve reviewed, we found at least 350,000 deceased individuals on the voter rolls right now, and around 25,000 cases were referred to states lacking citizenship documentation,” Dhillon explained. She mentioned that the Department of Homeland Security needs to further investigate these cases and determine how many ineligible individuals may have voted. “I’ve been in touch with voting rights activists providing details about voters who aren’t American citizens,” Dhillon added. “The narrative that this was just a myth? It’s false—it’s clearly happening.”

She highlighted a recent case in Minnesota where someone faced charges for voting without citizenship. “Minnesota has an unusual guarantee law that permits citizens to vouch for each other’s citizenship status. It’s frankly bizarre and contradicts fundamental American voting principles. We won’t stop until our investigation is complete,” she continued.

Dhillon also pointed out that numerous states have declined to release their voting rolls, despite the Civil Rights Act of 1960 granting attorneys general access to ensure legal compliance.

“I am taking legal action against 29 states and the District of Columbia for not providing the voter rolls required under the Civil Rights Act,” she said, noting that federal judges have ruled against the Trump administration in several relevant cases.

“We are working to expedite the appeals for these cases,” Dhillon stated, with plans to appeal in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and soon in the Sixth Circuit.

Additionally, President Trump issued an order in March 2025 directing the federal Election Assistance Commission to revise voter registration forms to mandate proof of citizenship.
