Russian Airstrikes Kill Two as Ukraine Strikes Back
KYIV, Ukraine – Officials reported on Sunday that Russian airstrikes resulted in at least two fatalities in Ukraine, coinciding with a Ukrainian military operation targeting a drone manufacturing site in southwestern Russia.
A teenager, just 16 years old, lost his life and four others sustained injuries during a significant drone assault in Chernihiv, a city in northern Ukraine, as noted by the city’s military administrator.
Dmytro Brzynskiy relayed on Telegram that rescuers discovered the young boy’s remains on Sunday morning while clearing debris. He also mentioned that three women and one man were among the injured amidst the attack, which reportedly ignited several residential fires.
In addition, drones struck Kherson, a southern Ukrainian city, where local officials indicated a man succumbed to injuries after a drone hit a van in the city center. Another individual was reportedly hospitalized due to injuries from the explosion.
The Ukrainian Air Force indicated that Russia unleashed 236 drones into Ukrainian territory overnight on Sunday. A notable 203 of these were intercepted, while 32 managed to hit various targets across 18 locations.
In response, Ukraine’s military stated they targeted a drone manufacturing facility in Taganrog, located in southwestern Russia, approximately 55 kilometers east of the Russian-controlled areas of eastern Ukraine.
Reportedly, a Ukrainian drone ignited a fire at the Atlant Aero factory, which specializes in the design and production of attack and reconnaissance drones, as well as parts for advanced unmanned aerial vehicles capable of carrying guided bombs weighing up to 250 kilograms.
The Ukrainian Navy confirmed it utilized an indigenously developed Neptune cruise missile to conduct the strike on the drone factory. They remarked that this company plays a crucial role in Russia’s military-industrial complex, where these drones are both developed and manufactured.
Images emerged showing large clouds of smoke billowing from the area, purportedly as a result of the airstrike.
According to Russian regional governor Yuri Slyusar, three individuals suffered injuries during a nighttime attack on commercial sites in Taganrog. He did not specify the targeted facilities but mentioned a warehouse was set ablaze following the strike.
Svetlana Kamburova, the Mayor of Taganrog, reported that several commercial enterprises, in addition to a vocational school and numerous vehicles, experienced damage from the strike.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense disclosed that their forces shot down 274 Ukrainian drones during the night alongside intercepting a guided bomb and a Neptune cruise missile, although they did not provide details regarding how many targets were attacked.
In another incident, Ukraine’s Interior Ministry initiated an official inquiry into a mass shooting in Kyiv that resulted in six deaths and at least 14 injuries the previous day.
A shooter armed with an automatic weapon killed six people in the capital, barricaded himself inside a supermarket with hostages, and was ultimately killed by police, according to authorities.
Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko described the gunman’s mental condition as “clearly unstable.”
The identity of the 58-year-old shooter has not been released, though President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned he was born in Russia. Investigators are trying to determine the motive behind this violent act.
Several police officers faced suspension for their inadequate response during the initial stages of the shooting. Klimenko criticized their behavior as “shameful and unbecoming” for law enforcement officials.
He also indicated that he does not plan to tighten gun ownership regulations, asserting that empowering responsible citizens with firearms strengthens the country’s defense against Russia.
This shooting incident stands out as unprecedented in wartime Kyiv, particularly following Russia’s extensive invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It occurred in a bustling downtown area near an apartment building and shopping center, leaving the streets littered with the victims as bystanders fled in panic.
Witnesses had observed the tragic scenes, with an Associated Press reporter present to see emergency responders carrying away the bodies, covered with blankets.
Additionally, President Zelensky expressed disappointment over the Trump administration’s decision to renew the suspension of sanctions against Russian oil shipments.
He emphasized in a post that “Every dollar paid for Russian oil is a war fund,” claiming that the extra income the Kremlin gains from oil significantly contributes to ongoing attacks on Ukraine.
Zelensky argued that halting Russian oil tankers is crucial, advocating for decreased exports of the aggressor’s oil as Ukraine seeks to maintain long-standing sanctions aimed at achieving that objective.
The recently established general permit, designed to alleviate supply issues from the conflict in Iran, exempts Russian oil tankers from U.S. sanctions for 30 days, effectively extending a prior 30-day license for oil deliveries made earlier.
