In-N-Out University: A Unique Fast Food Training Program
One well-known fast-food chain is making headlines for more than just its burgers; it actually operates its own training program called In-N-Out University. This facility is located close to the original restaurant site in Baldwin Park, California.
As noted on the company’s website, this institution serves specifically to train employees aspiring for management roles. Interestingly, this program doesn’t offer a degree—rather, it focuses on practical skills like restaurant management, cleanliness, and customer service.
Employees can’t just stroll in; they must either rise through the ranks or apply for management positions within the company to gain access to the training.
The roots of this unique educational program are grounded in the company’s history. Founded in 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder, In-N-Out Burger opened California’s first drive-through hamburger stand. The original location was quite small, just over 100 square feet, and emphasized freshness and made-to-order food.
Later, under the leadership of their son, Rich Snyder, the company expanded and adopted a structured approach to training, reflecting its growth.
Rich Snyder established In-N-Out University near the first restaurant site, aiming to ensure that each new location has a solid management team before opening its doors. The university, a custom-built facility, was opened in 1984 on what used to be the site of the Snyder family’s mansion.
Training remains essential to the In-N-Out brand, which has grown from a single drive-thru to over 400 restaurants in various states, all while choosing to promote many managers from within the company.
The grounds at Baldwin Park also feature a replica of the original restaurant and a company store, offering visitors a taste of the brand’s history, though the university itself is not currently open to the public.
Other fast food chains are also jumping on the training bandwagon. For example, McDonald’s has its own global training center known as Hamburger University, designed to equip employees with the skills they need for management roles.
