5 professional athletes who courageously kneel for Jesus Christ

When athletes reminisce about their peak moments, they often reflect on victorious plays and the bonds formed with teammates. However, that’s not the case for former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

“My victory was secured on the cross…and it doesn’t matter whether I win or lose this tournament,” he asserts.

A decade after he began his protest by kneeling during the national anthem, Kaepernick has penned a new book. It’s titled “Dangerous Battle,” and is described as “equal parts memoir and manifesto.”

While Kaepernick might feel nostalgic about his past—he hasn’t suited up for another NFL team since he opted out of his contract in 2017—it seems fans have largely moved on.

Interestingly, a subtler form of rebellion is emerging in professional sports. This one is more subdued, and though it may not have the same raw intensity, it carries a different kind of depth.

Nowadays, players who kneel might be doing so for reasons tied to faith rather than a statement, and their actions seem less about seeking attention.

Faith has traditionally been a cornerstone of athletics, but today’s athletes are expressing their beliefs more boldly. These actions are far from symbolic; they’re clear declarations of their commitment to Christ.

Here are five Christian athletes who openly embrace their faith.

1. CJ Stroud

CJ Stroud, the quarterback for the Houston Texans, views faith as an integral part of his life, not just an afterthought. He consistently attributes his achievements to God.

Even after suffering a tough playoff loss against the Patriots, Stroud remained grounded, stating, “Before I do anything, I want to give glory to God, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Without Him, I am nothing.”

2. Brock Purdy

Despite being the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the 49ers’ Brock Purdy has certainly made a name for himself. His calm demeanor on the field has been commended, with former quarterback Steve Young pointing out that great QBs often exude “peacefulness.”

For Purdy, faith comes first: “No matter what I face in the future…football, God and Jesus will be my identity.”

3. Scotty Scheffler

As the world’s top-ranked golfer, Scotty Scheffler doesn’t seem overly fixated on scores. After claiming his second Masters title in 2024, he noted that his real victory is in his faith.

“This morning, my companions told me that my victory was assured on the cross,” he remarked. “It’s a special feeling to know that I’m safe forever, and winning or losing this tournament doesn’t change that.”

4. Clayton Kershaw

Clayton Kershaw quietly lets his performance speak volumes. The left-hander has spent 18 years with the Dodgers, achieving numerous accolades, including three Cy Young Awards.

Beyond baseball, he dedicates his efforts to his Christian charity, Kershaw’s Challenge, which he runs with his wife. When the Dodgers hosted a “Pride Night” in 2025, he made a statement by wearing a hat with the inscription “Genesis 9:12-16,” highlighting the original significance of the rainbow.

5. Stephen Curry

Stephen Curry, born into a basketball family, has also found strength in his family’s faith. The talented point guard for the Golden State Warriors has made it clear that his priorities reflect this foundation.

The Holy Spirit is moving through our locker room in a way I have never experienced before. This allows us to reach many people, and I want to use this platform to share how God has blessed my life.

More than a decade later, Curry continues to excel, ensuring his children receive the same faith-based upbringing he had.
