From 'prideful nonbeliever' to Jesus believer: JD Vance shares his faith journey in an interview with Glenn Beck

Vice President J.D. Vance Releases Memoir on Faith Journey

On June 16, Vice President J.D. Vance launched his book, “Holy Communion: Finding the Way Back to the Faith.” In this memoir, he discusses his earlier departure from Christianity, his experience with atheism, and ultimately, his return to faith through his conversion to Catholicism in 2019.

In a recent interview with Glenn Beck, Vance shared insights into his spiritual journey.

“Can you tell me a little bit about the moment you decided to commit? [to faith]?” Glenn asked.

During the summer of 2018, Vance visited a Catholic cathedral. He mentioned that although he was showing interest in Christianity, he hadn’t yet fully embraced it.

“The cathedral was completely empty, and I felt despair. … Nobody was praying. It felt lifeless. But then, there was this beautiful ray of light streaming through the stained glass windows,” he narrated.

Vance recalled that the Catholic Church was embroiled in a significant scandal during this time, concerning allegations of abuse involving over 300 priests and affecting more than a thousand victims, which were systematically obscured by church authorities.

“The church faces tough situations, but I sensed that everything would be alright, and that I had a place here,” he expressed.

“That was the moment I made my decision, despite my doubts and stomach pains… I realized this is my home. I want to help make it as successful as I can, and that’s what I aimed to do.”

When Glenn inquired if this dedication felt the same as the moment he followed Christ, Vance noted that his journey to embracing Jesus was more gradual.

“I grew up in a family that didn’t go to church often, though it was religious. My grandmother occasionally took us to church, but it wasn’t a routine thing… So, during my teenage and early adult years, I became quite the arrogant atheist,” he explained.

“I was chasing all the usual markers of success—attending top schools, landing prestigious jobs, and making a lot of money. I thought these would validate my existence, and I ended up winning in elite circles,” he said, mentioning his time at Yale Law School.

But even with all those achievements, he felt an overwhelming emptiness.

“I looked around and realized, ‘The people I used to regard as simpletons are actually far happier and more interesting than the elite crowd I was part of,’” Vance shared.

This realization made him ponder whether the “character” and “wisdom” he observed in those simpler lives could be linked to the figure of Jesus Christ.

“Following Christ didn’t hit me like a lightning bolt; rather, it was a slow recognition of the truths in how various Christians lived and nurtured their families. Over time, I began feeling there was something genuine in that,” he reflected.

Ultimately, he decided he wanted Christ as not just a personal guide, but as a foundation for his family as well.

“I wanted to provide my family with what I lacked as a child: a genuine foundation and a real church community,” he explained. “I tried various churches, explored different places, and eventually found a church that I truly loved. That’s where we are today.”
