Dexter Lawrence’s New Chapter with the Bengals

Heads up, NFL teams—Dexter Lawrence is gearing up for a determined comeback next season.

“There’s a fire burning inside me like never before,” the defensive tackle expressed during his first interview since the trade to the Bengals.

The Giants traded Lawrence to Cincinnati, marking a pivotal moment in John Harbaugh’s inaugural offseason. The defensive standout sought a trade after negotiations for a new contract with the Giants fell through.

The Bengals made the move possible by offering the Giants their 10th overall draft pick in exchange.

In a chat with Bengals’ radio announcer Dan Hoard, posted on the team’s YouTube channel, Lawrence reflected on the significance of Cincinnati being willing to give up such a valuable pick to bring him on board, along with presenting him with a new deal.

“They really wanted me here and recognized the hard work I’ve put in during my seven seasons,” Lawrence shared. “I’m grateful and determined to demonstrate that their trust in me was well-placed. I’m thrilled, honestly. It feels like I have a fire burning in me that I’ve never had before. Becoming a Bengal is really exciting.”

Looking ahead, Lawrence seems eager to move past the offseason upheaval that marked the end of his time in New York.

He described the journey to Saturday’s trade as a “long process,” but there was a palpable “excitement” when he realized he could end up in Cincinnati.

“God got me through, and I’m ready to let my light shine and win some games,” he stated.

Once the trade was finalized, Lawrence signed a one-year, $28 million contract extension, ensuring his presence in Cincinnati through the 2028 season.

With the considerable price Cincinnati paid and the contract extension, all eyes will be on Lawrence this coming season. He had a career-best year in 2024, tallying nine sacks in 12 games, yet faced challenges in 2025, managing only half as many.

“I understand the narrative that comes with this,” he acknowledged, referring to the pressure. “But I embrace it. I know who I am and will remain true to that. I aim to be the player who elevates this defense.”
