Giants broadcaster criticizes pitchers for their protest during Pride Night

Mike Krukow, a longtime broadcaster for the San Francisco Giants, expressed his outrage over players’ decisions to display Bible verses on their hats during Pride Night.

The choice made by pitchers Ryan Walker, Landen Loup, JT Brubaker, and Sam Hentges has stirred significant controversy. Three of these pitchers opted to inscribe Bible verses on their hats, which featured the rainbow logo of San Francisco.

Last Friday, the Giants hosted their annual LGBTQ+ celebration, but the event took a turn for the worse when four players staged a protest.

“I think it’s crucial for players to understand the sensitivity of this city regarding cultural and religious freedoms,” Krukow remarked on KNBR. “It’s not just the LGBTQ+ community reacting; it’s the Northern California community that stands with them.”

Krukow also shared his disappointment with how the Giants organization was being treated. “In 1994, they were pioneers in supporting the gay community, openly saying they were for it and raising funds to combat AIDS. They did it wholeheartedly,” he noted.

“The Giants were the first to proudly wave a pride flag at their ballpark, and they faced national backlash for it. So, it stings to see them criticized now after doing so much to build a positive relationship with the gay community,” he added.

Krukow is just one voice among many condemning the actions of the four Giants pitchers, who received warnings from Major League Baseball for changing their uniforms.

MLB stated, “Writing on the cap is against our rules, and we’ve issued warnings to the players.” They later clarified that this routine warning doesn’t come with a penalty and doesn’t reflect on the message’s content.

Despite the backlash in San Francisco, Walker mentioned that the uproar was unexpected. “I anticipated some reactions, but I didn’t think it’d be this loud,” he said.

“In the end, we stood by our beliefs. I love playing for this city and for the Giants.” The recent events highlight a complex rift between the franchise’s strong ties to the LGBTQ+ community and the beliefs held by some players.
