WrestleMania 42 Highlights: CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns
Las Vegas – CM Punk and Roman Reigns clashed at WrestleMania 42, a matchup that showcased two wrestling giants who have significantly influenced WWE over the last fifteen years.
Punk stepped into the ring as the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, while Reigns aimed to secure his title after winning the Royal Rumble in January. The buildup included weeks of heated exchanges, with Punk threatening to “bury” Reigns alongside his father and Reigns remarking that Punk was simply too old for this fight. Tensions escalated on episodes of “Monday Night Raw,” where Reigns even hinted that a loss would push him to leave WWE.
As WrestleMania approached, the atmosphere at Allegiant Stadium became electric, setting the stage for an intense showdown.
Reigns’ entrance music reverberated through the stadium as he made his way down the ramp, strikingly without his usual adviser, “Wiseman,” for the second consecutive year. Punk, meanwhile, made a grand appearance at the stage’s peak, rallying the crowd with a shout of “It’s time for some hoopla.” The fans joined in, singing along to his theme song, “Cult of Personality.”
This time, the electrifying energy in the arena was palpable, far surpassing that of the previous night. Both competitors clearly embraced the stakes of the match.
The confrontation began dramatically, with the two engaging in fierce banter before starting their battle for dominance. They exchanged blows, and though Reigns initially took control, the crowd rallied behind their apparent “tribal leader.” A classic Samoan drop by Reigns marked the beginning of his offensive play.
In a flurry of action, Punk countered Reigns’ moves and leapt dramatically onto the barricade to execute a clothesline on Reigns, showcasing his agility and determination.
As the match progressed, both wrestlers threw a series of punches and fought hard for control. Reigns was quick to attempt his signature Superman Punch, but Punk countered adeptly and followed up with a crossbody from the top rope.
Punk seemed to gain the upper hand momentarily, executing a running knee and a bulldog, and even calling for his finisher, the GTS. But Reigns, ever resourceful, managed to dodge and counter the move.
The confrontation took a dangerous turn as Punk executed a suicide dive into Reigns, sending him crashing onto the announce table. Yet Reigns retaliated, powerbombing Punk and sending him into the ground, leaving Punk bloodied and reeling.
Despite the odds, Punk fought back resiliently. He nearly connected with a GTS again, only for Reigns to respond with his signature spear, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.
The match showcased what seemed like a friendly rivalry but quickly devolved into an intense battle of wills, with each wrestler trying to outdo the other.
Punk incorporated some clever distractions, even going so far as to blind the referee momentarily to land a low blow. But Reigns, with a tenacity that drew applause from the crowd, somehow managed to kick out time and again.
When Punk attempted to finish the fight by slamming Reigns into the GTS, he found himself outmaneuvered again by Reigns’ unyielding spear.
As both competitors vied for victory, the tension mounted, with the crowd split between the two, their excitement tangible in the arena.
Ultimately, Reigns emerged victorious, reclaiming the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time since losing it to Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 40. Seven-time champion now, Reigns solidified his legacy even further on this exhilarating night in Las Vegas.
