Magic Triumph Over Pistons in Playoff Opener
In a surprising turn of events, Paolo Banchero led the Orlando Magic to a 112-101 victory against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons during Game 1 of their playoff series on Sunday night. Banchero’s performance included 23 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, further extending the Pistons’ unfortunate history in home playoff games, which now stands at 11 straight losses—a record streak.
The Pistons haven’t experienced a postseason victory at home since 2008. They’ll have a chance to bounce back on Wednesday night for Game 2 against the Magic.
Detroit’s Cade Cunningham made waves, scoring a playoff career-high of 39 points, with Tobias Harris contributing 17. However, the rest of the team struggled to make a significant impact offensively.
Franz Wagner was particularly effective for Orlando, netting 11 of his 19 points in the pivotal fourth quarter, helping to secure the win for a Magic team that led throughout the night. Desmond Bane and Wendell Carter each chipped in with 17 points, while Jalen Suggs added 16.
Interestingly, the Pistons haven’t progressed beyond the first round in 18 years, while the Magic’s last advance was in 2010. So, there’s a bit at stake here, you might say.
Orlando appeared well-prepared, while Detroit, on the other hand, seemed a bit rusty as they took the court. The Magic, coming off a loss to Charlotte in a prior play-in game, took an early lead, scoring 18-5 mid-first quarter after forcing the Pistons into 1-for-6 shooting and a handful of turnovers.
The Pistons did make a push to close the gap to two points, but Banchero and Suggs responded fiercely, combining for 20 points and leading Orlando to a 35-27 advantage.
At halftime, the Magic held a slight lead of 55-51. However, the Pistons struggled in the second half, allowing Orlando to capitalize. An early timeout from Detroit’s coach, J.B. Bickerstaff, was called after Orlando scored eight of the first nine points of the half.
Detroit managed to tie the game at 65 following a series of impressive 3-pointers from Cunningham. But again, Banchero wouldn’t allow momentum to slip. He responded with a long jump shot, and Bane followed up with another 3-pointer, restoring the Magic’s double-digit advantage as they entered the fourth quarter leading 81-74.
