Fire Captain sentenced to life for murdering fiancée and her son due to a firefighter film

A California fire chief has been sentenced to life in prison after killing his fiancée and her 7-year-old son during a dispute about how firefighters are represented in films.

Darrin McFarlin, 47, fatally shot Marissa DiVody-Ressa Herzog, 29, and her son Josiah in August. This tragic event occurred after he became enraged while watching the Christian film “Fireproof,” according to reports.

He also aimed a gun at his girlfriend’s 9-year-old daughter, Seraphina, but allowed her to leave after she pleaded for her life.

McFarlin, who worked with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, became so upset with the movie that he stormed out, leading to a heated confrontation in the bedroom.

Initially, he attempted to strangle DiVody-Ressa, prompting her to flee and threaten to report him for domestic violence.

In a moment of desperation, he grabbed a gun and shot DiVody-Ressa while she was on the phone with her father, right in front of her children. This horrifying information was relayed by the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office.

McFarlin then turned the gun on Josiah, shooting him in the chest. He aimed at Seraphina, who, thankfully, managed to escape through a doggie door after being told to leave.

She was later found by police, who arrived at the scene to discover the chaos.

McFarlin attempted to flee but was apprehended by law enforcement in Nevada and later charged with murder, losing his job at California Fire, where he had served since 2000.

During the court proceedings, Seraphina expressed her grief in a letter, saying, “Ever since Darling killed my mother and my brother Jojo, I have been truly sad and shocked. I miss them every day.”

After receiving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, McFarlin expressed remorse, stating, “I am truly sorry for what I did, especially for Seraphina,” and added that he intended to take responsibility.

However, shortly after his apology, members of the victim’s family responded with cries of “Coward!” from the audience, according to reports.

District Attorney Vern Pearson described the incident as “a horrific and senseless act of violence that took two innocent lives and forever changed a family.” He added that this sentence guarantees McFarlin will never harm anyone else again, noting that the community’s thoughts are with the surviving child and all who loved Marissa and her son.
