Disability advocate Samanta Bullock was refused boarding on a British Airways flight at JFK due to her wheelchair.

Model and entrepreneur Samanta Bullock has shared her experience of being denied boarding on a British Airways flight at JFK Airport because she was traveling alone in a wheelchair.

During her attempt to board a flight to London, she was reportedly informed that she couldn’t fly due to what she interpreted as disability discrimination. She received no clear answers relating to ticket issues or safety regulations; instead, she was told that the flight crew wouldn’t be able to assist her with basic needs like using the bathroom or, in emergencies, evacuating her.

Block, 47, expressed her deep shock at this explanation. She mentioned that she has traveled alone for years and feels that a requirement for disabled individuals to have companions effectively means that they have to pay for two flights instead of one, which seems inherently unfair.

After enduring several hours of difficulty, Bullock was moved—somewhat abruptly—to an American Airlines flight, where she faced similar questioning.

Now, she is considering legal action against British Airways, feeling that her rights, as well as those of other travelers with disabilities, have been violated. Bullock has documented her experience and aims to file a lawsuit regarding the mistreatment she encountered.

She firmly stated that people with disabilities deserve the same rights to travel and live independently as anyone else.

Interestingly, Bullock had recently attended events focused on disability rights, including the Block Inclusion Future of Fashion Show and a United Nations conference addressing the rights of disabled individuals. After engaging in discussions about equality and dignity, she was met with a stark contrast upon flying back home.

At just 14 years old, Bullock experienced a life-changing accident that left her paralyzed and reliant on a wheelchair. However, she managed to recover and became Brazil’s top wheelchair tennis player, even placing second in doubles at the 2007 Parapan American Games.

A spokesperson for British Airways expressed regret over her experience and assured that they are investigating the incident, promising to keep in contact as they assess the situation.
