5 cars from the 2026 New York Auto Show that you might really consider purchasing

The New York International Auto Show reflects changing times in the industry.

In a recent conversation with Karl Brauer on “The Drive,” we noted how automakers are less dependent on these events than in the past. Major announcements often happen online now, and many media events are no longer open to the public. While the show goes on, the industry is evolving.

That said, for car buyers, the experience remains valuable. You can stroll the floor, sit in different vehicles, and compare them without any sales pressure.

Some models steal the spotlight, especially concept cars. Yet, if you’re genuinely considering a purchase in the next year, the key factors are availability, pricing, and how well a car fits your lifestyle.

Here’s a look at five standout vehicles from this year’s show that caught the attention of real buyers.

1. Volkswagen Atlas

Volkswagen has taken a straightforward approach with the Atlas. Sticking to the fundamentals usually leads to the right choices.

It’s one of the rare SUVs where the third row is genuinely usable, not just for kids. With starting prices around $40,000, the cabin has been revamped for simplicity and ease of use.

It may not be a design revolution, but its beauty and practicality are likely reasons for its strong sales.

2. Kia EV3

There’s been a lot of buzz about “affordable EVs,” yet few have made an appearance.

The Kia EV3 might change that.

With a target price under $30,000, a range of about 300 miles, and access to Tesla’s charging network, it could become a viable option for the average buyer.

But that’s still a big “if.” It’s definitely worth watching, though.

3. Hyundai Boulder Concept

Hyundai surprised many with its off-road concept, the Boulder, inspired by the Bronco and Wrangler, which will run on gasoline.

This isn’t an arbitrary decision.

While some manufacturers push for a fully electric range, Hyundai is clearly acknowledging consumer preferences for a mix of options: gas, hybrid, and electric.

If the Boulder can be produced without losing its essence, it could strongly influence a segment that’s been somewhat stagnant.

4. Genesis GV70

Genesis keeps making a name for itself at these showcases, but there’s more happening away from the spotlight.

The GV70 is the brand’s top seller, which makes sense given its affordability, extensive features, and straightforward design.

Meanwhile, Genesis is also introducing its new Magma performance line, which shows confidence in its brand development.

5. Kia Seltos

Sometimes, quality goes unnoticed. Take the refreshed Kia Seltos as an example.

This model is smaller, more affordable, and sports a design reminiscent of the Telluride. For many, it strikes a perfect balance between usability, cost, and overall livability.

You might not collect awards with it, but it handles the essential daily tasks quite well.
