Man Reportedly Murders Woman at Ancient Pyramids and Takes His Own Life

Tragic Shooting at Teotihuacan Pyramid

A shooting incident at Mexico’s Teotihuacan pyramid resulted in the death of a Canadian woman and left several others injured, authorities reported on Monday.

The attacker targeted this popular archaeological site, fatally wounding the woman before taking his own life. Mexico’s Security Cabinet shared preliminary details via social media. They indicated that a firearm, a knife, and live ammunition were recovered from the scene. According to state officials, at least six people sustained injuries—four from gunfire and two from falls—and are currently receiving medical treatment.

The injured included two individuals from Colombia, one from Canada, and one from Russia, as reported by Cristóbal Castaneda, Mexico’s state security secretary. He reassured reporters that the situation is now under control. Footage circulating online showed at least one person on top of the pyramid as gunshots rang out.

Teotihuacan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 30 miles from Mexico City, is well-known for its remarkable structures, including two massive pyramids, making it a significant destination for tourists.

In a statement, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the swift response from federal and local authorities. “What happened in Teotihuacan today deeply hurts us. We extend our heartfelt solidarity to the victims and their families. We’re in contact with the Canadian Embassy,” she stated on social media.

Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned they are coordinating with various embassies to assist the injured foreign nationals.
