NASCAR Driver’s Unique Dual Career
Patrick Staropoli, a NASCAR driver, is not just fast on the track; he also practices as an eye surgeon. It’s an unexpected combination that surprises many fans.
In a recent interview, Staropoli shared insights while discussing the upcoming Kansas Speedway event. He emphasized the importance of hand-eye coordination, which he believes plays a role in both his racing and medical careers.
Driving the No. 48 Big Machine Racing Chevrolet in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Staropoli noted that people are often intrigued by his medical background.
“In the doctor’s office, patients frequently bring up their eye issues, and then they want to know about my racing experiences,” the retinal specialist explained. It’s interesting how those conversations blend.
At autograph sessions, he often gets asked what type of doctor he is and if they could come in for eye check-ups. It’s kind of quirky, I guess, how it all ties together.
Staropoli has been passionate about racing from a young age but always knew he wanted to be a doctor. He balanced both pursuits, pausing his racing career to complete medical school before returning to NASCAR full-time in 2025.
“We’re aiming to leverage our racing platform to highlight important medical issues,” he shared with the media, expressing a clear commitment to awareness.
Recently, at the Kansas Lottery 300 held on April 19, Staropoli started in 24th but managed to finish in 14th. It’s a decent outcome, though I wonder if he felt the pressure of juggling both worlds.
