Mother's emotional message about her son's 'final perfect day' after Coach K's grandson was charged in fatal DWI

The tragic DWI accident involving Joseph Savarino took place on Saturday, just after the victim, a 15-year-old boy, had his “last perfect day,” as described by his grieving mother.

Savarino, 26, who is the grandson of the famous Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, has been charged with driving under the influence following the fatal incident with the young boy riding an electric bike.

In a heartfelt post, Jack O’Shea’s mother shared details about his final day, highlighting it as a joyful occasion.

Jack O’Shea, remembered fondly by his mother Alison, was described as “our perfect, smart, athletic, fearless, handsome boy.” She recounted his day, noting he began it by attending Confession at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. After that, he played two baseball games with his high school team, excelling at first base, and later went for his usual bike ride with friends.

“Returning home, he was struck by a car. Jesus took him right away,” Alison expressed. “We’ll never understand why he was taken from us so soon, but we must believe he’s now our angel. He made us better, and we will carry him in our hearts.”

Alison reflected on her son’s adventurous spirit, noting his love for hiking and maps, which inspired those around him. “The depth of this grief is something we could never have anticipated. No parent wishes to join this heartbreaking club,” she shared.

The accident happened in Durham, North Carolina, just before 9 p.m. Reports indicate that Savarino was pulled over around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, with a recorded blood alcohol level of 0.11. He later admitted to having been drinking that night.

Online records indicate that he has been charged with a misdemeanor for driving while impaired.

After posting a $100,000 bail, Savarino was released from jail on Monday.

Jack O’Shea is survived by his mother Alison, father Chris, and his 13-year-old sister Emily.

Alison concluded, “Life will never be the same, and honestly, we’re unsure how to move forward. But Chris, Emily, and I are dedicated to honoring Jack’s memory for everyone who cherished him.”

“He was truly a remarkable person.”
