Car bursts into flames during reported street takeover on Chicago's South Side

No arrests took place after a car exploded during a reported street takeover on the South Side of Chicago last weekend.

Over the weekend, footage captured in the Gresham neighborhood showed a crowd gathered around a burning car. In the video, someone could be seen throwing an object into the vehicle, which ignited and erupted in flames moments later.

According to the Chicago police, the gathering was dispersed by officers who arrived early Sunday morning. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and no one was taken into custody.

The incident is part of a troubling trend in the city, with similar occurrences rising. Last week, Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed concerns about a potential “teen trend” emerging on the South Side, though he avoided the term “takeover.” He expressed caution, advising parents to monitor their children’s activities closely during the evening. He stated, “These gatherings can be dangerous and often escalate to violence.”

On March 30, a previous street takeover involved hundreds of teenagers, creating chaos that lasted late into the night, as seen in footage showing large crowds climbing into cars and dancing in the streets.

A local resident noted that the damage to his vehicle was around $1,000. During the chaos, at least three curfew violations were noted, and a 16-year-old girl faced charges for illegal weapon possession and disorderly conduct.

Currently, the investigation into this incident continues, but no arrests have been made so far.
