Trump Expects Continued Bombing of Iran if Negotiations Fail
President Trump stated on Tuesday that he anticipates ongoing airstrikes against Iran if current negotiations do not lead to a resolution of the conflict. Senior officials are set to meet in Pakistan for a second round of talks with expectations of reaching an agreement by Wednesday’s deadline. During an appearance on CNBC, Trump indicated that should the ceasefire not be extended, U.S. military operations against Iran would likely resume.
“I predict that it will lead to bombing because, honestly, it reflects a more positive approach,” Trump mentioned on the “Squawk Box” show. “We’re prepared to act. The troops are ready and they are truly impressive.”
Previously, a delegation had traveled to Islamabad for extensive discussions with Iranian representatives, but talks fell through when Iran refused to abandon its nuclear ambitions. Trump hinted over the weekend that he might personally visit Islamabad if a deal is struck before the deadline.
If negotiations do not yield results, Trump warned that Iran would face an unprecedented military response, threatening to target bridges and energy facilities nationwide. Earlier this month, he remarked that if an agreement with the U.S. wasn’t reached by the early April deadline, “the entire civilization will perish.” He has also been dismissive regarding concerns about possible war crimes related to attacking Iran’s nuclear sites.
Trump has consistently claimed that the conflict would last only two to three weeks, though there appears to be public skepticism around this assertion. A recent Ipsos poll indicated a significant discontent among Americans, with 67% disapproving of how Trump is managing the war. More than half of those surveyed expressed the belief that military action in Iran has not been justified.
