Veteran Skydiver Reflects on Virginia Tech Scoreboard Crash

Pasha Palankar, a military veteran and experienced parachutist, shared his intense experience of crashing into the scoreboard at Virginia Tech during a spring football game. Unexpected wind gusts—much stronger than what he had anticipated—caused him to lose control. He expressed that the scoreboard was crucial in saving his life, as it prevented him from potentially tumbling into the stands.

In an interview, Palankar recounted that a sudden gust of wind almost pushed him and his large American flag into the spectators. This gust was significantly above the safety limit, which made for a precarious situation. He explained, “That 1,100-square-foot flag is held in place by a 26-pound weight, which could have injured fans in the stands.” Palankar had been searching for an alternative landing spot when he faced a crosswind shear of 27 knots—well above the safe threshold of 14 knots. He noted that the wind picked up the flag and directed him straight towards the scoreboard.

A video that went viral captured the moment of impact, showing Palankar hanging on the scoreboard for about 20 minutes while awaiting rescue. He praised the quick response of the fire department, which played a key role in his safe retrieval.

Having performed more than 1,100 jumps, Palankar admitted that he had never encountered a situation like this before. He mentioned that the jump would likely have been called off if weather forecasts had predicted such strong winds. “This isn’t something they teach you in training,” he reflected.

Currently, he has his arm in a sling due to a shoulder injury from the incident, yet he acknowledges that it could have been far worse. He emphasized the precarious nature of his position, stating, “You can’t see it from this angle, but there is a road between the Jumbotron and the stadium, and it’s quite a drop. If I hadn’t landed on that scoreboard, I wouldn’t be here.” He also shared how the flag had to be released to prevent further entanglement with the wind, which complicated the scenario even more.

Despite the frightening experience, when asked about the future, Palankar confidently stated that he would “absolutely” consider skydiving again once he fully recovers from his injury.
