Maryland Teen Accused of Carjacking County Clerk
A county court clerk in Maryland is pressing charges against a teenager who allegedly threatened her with a gun and stole her car.
Mahasin El-Amin reported that she was on a phone call in her white 2014 Lexus when a young man approached. He allegedly pointed a gun at her, forcing her to relinquish her vehicle.
“I’m really grateful to be alive. I thought I was going to die,” she reflected in a Friday interview. The ordeal left her shaken and terrified.
El-Amin, currently serving as the Prince George’s County Circuit Court Clerk and running for re-election, mentioned her surprise at the speed in which the incident unfolded. “It was in an instant, and I honestly thought, ‘This is it for me,'” she said.
Following the incident, police spotted the stolen Lexus and initiated a pursuit, which ended when the driver crashed the vehicle. The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Kylie Hicks from Bowie, tried to escape on foot but was apprehended.
El-Amin expressed relief upon hearing of Hicks’ arrest but felt anxious upon discovering his criminal history. Reports indicated that a gun linked to an earlier shooting was recovered at the time of his arrest, and he has since been charged with attempted first-degree murder.
“I was shocked to my core,” El-Amin said of the developments. “I thank God every day that I’m safe.” She emphasized the importance of being vigilant to protect oneself against violent crime.
“I’m relieved that this dangerous individual is off the streets,” she added, noting that it contributes to the overall safety of the community.
Interestingly, carjacking incidents in the county have actually declined sharply; there were only 18 reported in the current year— a 56% drop compared to the previous year with a projection of 500 such incidents in 2023.
Hicks has been denied bail and is currently in custody.
