Tragic Attack in Burbank Leaves One Dead

A shocking incident unfolded early in the morning in a typically peaceful Southern California neighborhood, with a mother killed and her daughter hospitalized. Authorities report that the attack took place in Burbank, leading to the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect, Sergio Frere, who is now facing charges of murder and attempted murder. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case.

The distressing event was reported shortly after 6 a.m. on April 20, at a residence on North Brighton Street. When officers arrived at the scene in response to a call for help, they discovered both a mother and her daughter with stab wounds.

Sadly, the mother, identified as 59-year-old Arti Varma, succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to the hospital. Her 25-year-old daughter, Meera Varma, is currently in stable condition and is a recognized mental health advocate known for her work alongside prominent figures like Oprah Winfrey and President Joe Biden.

Arti Varma had a career as a first-grade teacher at Bret Harte Elementary School, and her loss has deeply impacted the community. The Burbank Unified School District expressed their sorrow, noting her dedication to her students and the positive impact she had on the school community.

Friends remembered her as a bright light who was always happy and dedicated to her work. Neighbors, still in disbelief over the occurrence, noted that such violent acts are rare in their community.

One neighbor described their shock, saying, “I just don’t understand why anyone would do something like that.” Another mentioned that it seemed there might have been a break-in, highlighting the initial struggle for survival that Meera faced in the hospital.

According to police, the investigation included interviewing witnesses, searching the area, and reviewing surveillance footage. The suspect was apprehended on Monday evening without incident after a SWAT team executed a search warrant at a location where he was staying. Evidence related to the crime was recovered during this operation.

As of now, authorities are still determining the relationship, if any, between the suspect and the victims, as no motive has been released. The investigation, however, is ongoing.
