Canada advises travelers to exercise significant caution in Morocco.

Travel Advisory for Morocco from Canadian Government

Travelers to North Africa are being alerted about safety risks, particularly as Morocco remains a popular destination. Recently, the Canadian government issued a travel advisory for Morocco, warning of potential dangers that Americans and other travelers should be aware of.

Morocco, known for its historic cities, vibrant markets, and ancient sites, draws tourists to places like Marrakech’s souks, camel riding in the Sahara, and coastal towns such as Essaouira. However, the updated advisory suggests that visitors should proceed with caution.

Canadian officials have raised concerns about instances of petty theft, armed robbery, and issues related to credit and debit card fraud. Moreover, the advisory mentioned risks linked to “terrorism and attacks targeting foreign nationals.”

There’s also a specific warning about the area near the Algerian-Moroccan border, suggesting travelers avoid this region due to increased military presence, an unstable security situation, and the challenges related to identifying the border.

Interestingly, this caution isn’t confined to remote areas. The advisory also highlights that demonstrations frequently occur near government buildings in major cities like Rabat and Casablanca and can turn violent unexpectedly. It might even disrupt traffic and public transportation.

Canada’s advisory aligns with that of the U.S. State Department, which has categorized Morocco as a Level 2 destination, advocating for increased caution among travelers.

Furthermore, this week’s alert included mentions of potential “kidnapping threats against Western nationals,” especially in more isolated regions and near the borders with Algeria and Mauritania. It strongly emphasized the need for travelers to maintain a high level of vigilance, particularly in southern and border areas of Morocco, and advised against hiking alone in remote mountain regions.

In light of these alerts, Fox News Digital has sought further comments from the U.S. State Department regarding travel advice for Americans heading to Morocco. Earlier this month, the U.S. issued a travel advisory for Albania, citing concerns related to tensions with Iran. Additionally, the U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago has warned of heightened risks associated with terrorism, recommending Americans to “reconsider travel” due to crime in that region.
