NFL Draft Night: Dreams Become Reality
For over 20 players, Thursday night was the culmination of lifelong aspirations as names were called at the NFL Draft in Pittsburgh.
Tom Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl winner and minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, shared some thoughts for the incoming rookies, reflecting on their journeys and the significance of the moment.
He emphasized the path ahead and urged new players to concentrate on their future. “When you wake up tomorrow morning, your career will hinge on what you do next. Competing with the best means elevating every part of yourself,” he advised.
Although Brady wasn’t present in the Raiders’ draft room, he reached out to the Raiders’ No. 1 pick, Fernando Mendoza, welcoming him with a message: “Welcome to Las Vegas @fernandomendoza. Time to get to work. @Raiders.”
Mendoza faces a long road ahead, especially when compared to Brady’s own journey, having been drafted at a much later No. 199 by the New England Patriots in 2000.
During his visit with the Raiders leading up to the draft, Mendoza noted that Brady’s message was straightforward and motivating. “He told me it wouldn’t always be easy and that he wants to guide whoever ends up as the quarterback for the Raiders, whether that’s me or someone else,” Mendoza reflected.
Other notable first-round selections included the Kansas City Chiefs moving up to pick No. 6 to choose LSU cornerback Mansour Delane. Shortly following, the Cowboys made headlines by trading up to No. 11 to select Ohio State safety Caleb Downs.
