UMass Amherst's Chef of the Year Jeffrey MacDonald is accused of killing his wife Emma MacDonald at a hotel on campus.

Chef Charged with Murder on UMass Amherst Campus

A notable chef from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, recognized as the “Chef of the Year,” was charged this past Wednesday with the murder of his wife inside an on-campus hotel.

Jeffrey McDonald reportedly told authorities that he deliberately beat his wife, Emma McDonald, to death “using his hands, feet, and various other objects,” as detailed in a police report.

“I was going to kill my wife,” said Jeffrey McDonald, a 36-year-old sous chef, while in his hotel room at the Massachusetts Campus Center.

Police responded to the residence hall around 7:40 p.m. after receiving a 911 call about a “violent struggle” involving McDonald.

During the incident, it’s alleged that he threw multiple objects at the officers and even punched one officer in the face.

After the situation was controlled, officers discovered Emma McDonald’s body in room 413 of the hotel. She was 31 years old and working at the university at the time.

Authorities noted her injuries were consistent with a violent assault, which raised alarm among investigators.

In a communication to staff on Thursday, university officials reassured that there was no ongoing threat to the campus.

“This is heartbreaking and deeply disturbing news for our campus,” stated President Javier Reyes. “Our thoughts go out to those affected, including the families, friends, and colleagues of everyone involved,” he added.

While acknowledging that the lack of complete details may cause distress, Reyes emphasized that this was essential for protecting the integrity of the investigation.

McDonald faces charges of first-degree murder and assaulting a police officer and pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on Thursday.

This incident comes just nine months after McDonald was honored as the American Culinary Federation’s 2025 “Chef of the Year.” The award recognized his leadership and contributions to the culinary field, having already achieved significant milestones including winning the Northeast Region of the NACUFS Culinary Challenge and earning a gold medal from the ACF.

“Being recognized as Chef of the Year by ACF is an incredible milestone,” McDonald said upon receiving that honor. “I’m grateful for the support of my colleagues at UMass Dining.”

Currently, McDonald is being held without bail, with his next court appearance set for May 22. Reports indicate that the public defender’s office has requested an evaluation of his competency to stand trial.
