Civil rights organizations strengthen their positions following the SPLC indictment.

This week’s criminal charges against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) have prompted civil rights organizations to quickly mobilize and bolster support. Following the indictment, advocates participated in a conference call where they explored strategies to assist the SPLC, which is facing accusations from federal prosecutors of illegally directing funds to hate groups linked to informant networks.

This call was part of a well-coordinated response that had been in the works for over a year, anticipating greater scrutiny from the Trump administration. Civil rights groups had been engaging in extensive behind-the-scenes collaboration, preparing for potential indictments and audits that could disrupt their operations.

“The government’s main intention is often to cripple organizations, forcing them to halt their work while they focus on self-protection. Our hope is that through collective efforts to support the SPLC, we can prevent that from happening,” remarked Vanita Gupta, who facilitated one of the discussions among activists.

In a show of solidarity, a coalition of more than 100 activist groups issued a letter on Tuesday, expressing support for organizations “unjustly targeted” by the federal government, with the SPLC as a signatory. “An attack on one is an attack on all,” declared a group known as the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, promising to share resources and support with any organization facing such power abuses.

For many years, the SPLC has reportedly supported undercover operations targeting hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, and those behind the notorious 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. However, the Trump administration argues that the significant financial resources allocated to these efforts—approximately $3 million between 2014 and 2023—extend beyond intelligence gathering and inadvertently finance the hate the SPLC aims to combat.
