Video — Woman Finds Biological Father and is Adopted Again: 'I Love Her'

This upcoming Father’s Day stands out for a dad who has gone through a profound journey of self-discovery, especially since his biological daughter was unaware of his existence.

Jennifer Skiles, age 46, was born on a U.S. army base in Germany, yet there was a void in her birth certificate where her father’s name should have appeared. People reported this story on Friday.

Her mother made the tough decision to put her up for adoption, largely due to the abusive relationship she was in. Skiles, now based in Tennessee, was adopted by a family in Virginia. Unfortunately, her adoptive father subjected her to years of abuse until her untimely death at 18, while her adoptive mother passed away a few years later.

As Skiles grew older, she began to wonder about her origins, driven by a need for belonging and family. People noted, “Finding belonging and family was very important to me.”

She ultimately connected with her biological mother, Cheryl Brown, who resided in Texas, and they established a phone relationship. Their bond strengthened over time, and Skiles started uncovering details about her biological father.

“Before she passed away, she gave me a name—just that he was from Rhode Island. That was my starting point. I used my DNA results, Facebook, and made it my mission to locate him,” Skiles explained to WPRI in January.

When she finally spoke to her father, Paul Ronald from Rhode Island, Skiles said: “The moment I heard his voice, I can’t explain it. I felt like I was home. I just melted into the phone. All I wanted was to absorb every bit of this connection.”

Ronald recounted meeting Brown, a nurse, while he was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, in 1978. They shared weekends in New York, and he held onto a box of red soap from those times.

“I cherish this night because deep down, something told me it was special,” Skiles said.

In January, Ronald, who is now married with three children, formally adopted Skiles, who herself has five children.

“She’s my daughter, just like my other kids. Here, she’s one of us,” he remarked. They are currently preparing for a virtual gathering to celebrate Father’s Day.

Father’s Day is recognized in various countries, according to Britannica. This holiday traces its roots back to the United States, where the initiative is often credited to Sonora Smart Dodd. After losing their mother during childbirth, Dodd’s father raised her alongside her five siblings. The first Father’s Day took place on June 19, 1910, coinciding with Dodd’s father’s birthday, and it became a national holiday in the U.S. in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed a bill designating the third Sunday in June for the occasion.

Ronald said to WBIR, “I feel blessed every day. I often tell people that if they shake my hand, they’re meeting the luckiest man alive.” Many share in his happiness, and he adds, “It’s quite obvious—I love her.”
