House Ethics Investigation Deepens After Democratic Lawmaker Resigns, Republicans Face Expulsion Vote
Sheila Charfilas McCormick, a Democrat from Florida, has resigned ahead of an ethics hearing related to allegations of misusing disaster relief funds. Her departure has sparked conversations about other lawmakers currently under scrutiny, including Republican Rep. Cory Mills and Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar. Mills may face a vote for expulsion due to domestic violence accusations, while Omar is still being investigated for financial disclosure and marriage fraud issues.
Interestingly, despite resigning, Charfilas McCormick is still registered to seek re-election, raising questions about her confidence in navigating the political landscape amidst serious investigations into her conduct.
On April 17, shortly before stepping down, Charfilas McCormick declared her intention to run for a position with the Florida Department of State. This announcement came as the House Ethics Committee was preparing to recommend punitive actions against her for allegedly diverting disaster relief funds into her campaign through various companies. She is reported to have committed multiple campaign finance violations, including instances of false financial disclosures and misappropriation of public funds.
While Charfilas McCormick maintains her innocence, she has indicated a willingness to defend herself outside of her current political office. In a statement, she expressed discontent with the process, highlighting a perceived lack of fair treatment from the Ethics Committee, which denied her attorney adequate time to prepare a response. She asserted, “This was not a fair process… I will not sit back and allow my due process rights to be trampled upon.”
Charfilas McCormick then announced her resignation from Congress, effective immediately, stating her desire to focus on advocating for her constituents in Florida’s 20th Congressional District.
Her resignation has temporarily suspended the Ethics Commission’s authority in her case, but she still faces federal charges. Last November, she was indicted for allegedly embezzling $5 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). To date, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has not scheduled a special election to fill the resulting vacancy.
