Shooting Incident in Harlem Involves NYPD Officer
On Friday night, an NYPD officer shot at a man seated outside a convenience store in Harlem, according to police reports.
The shooter, identified as Randy Negron, 32, who is currently on parole for attempted murder, allegedly targeted a 22-year-old man on West 125th Street, near Amsterdam Avenue, around 6:20 p.m.
It seems two plainclothes officers, driving nearby, witnessed the alleged attack as Negron opened fire.
NYPD Deputy Commissioner Aaron Edwards mentioned during a news conference that the officers quickly exited their vehicle, with one pursuing Negron.
In the meantime, another gunman entered the scene, also aiming at Negron as he tried to escape.
Edwards confirmed that police officers returned fire as well. Negron was hit once, but it’s unclear whether the shot came from the police or the other gunman, who fled the scene and remained at large.
A local resident, who goes by Julian, recounted his experience. While shopping, he heard gunfire and noted, “I didn’t expect that to happen. It’s something I’ve never seen before.” He added, “Usually, these things don’t occur here. We’ve had some scuffles in the past, yet police chases leading to shots fired—it’s like something from a movie.”
Both Negron and the victim, struck multiple times, were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital. Reports indicate Negron is stable, while the victim’s condition is serious but stable. Thankfully, no officers were harmed during this chaotic event.
As of Friday night, no charges had been filed regarding the incident. Notably, Negron was previously convicted of attempted murder in a June 2015 incident involving multiple victims in the same area. He is set for release in June 2025 and will be on parole until August 2029. Authorities noted that Negron has 11 prior arrests, some involving violent offenses.
The NYPD’s investigative division is looking into this shooting.
