Democrats Prepare for Potential Third Impeachment of Trump

A faction of House Democrats is starting to strategize for a possible third impeachment of President Donald Trump. Some members are advocating for the party to be ready with impeachment charges well ahead of a potential shift in majority by January 2027.

Illinois Congresswoman Delia Ramirez emphasized that the Democratic Party ought to begin formulating a strategy right away. “This is something I keep reiterating to our leaders… we require a well-defined and coordinated approach,” she stated. She encouraged her peers to hold “shadow hearings” and finish any necessary investigative work to act swiftly on the first day. Arizona Representative Yasamine Ansari mentioned that if Democrats regain control of the chamber, “the push for impeachment will be overwhelming.”

This endeavor has been gaining traction over the past year. Last June, when Democratic Texas Representative Al Green called for a vote, 128 Democrats stood against the bill, while only 78 voted in favor, according to Axios. By December, Green’s second effort had the backing of 140 Democrats, leading to a House vote of 237-140 in favor of advancing the resolution. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and his colleagues opted for a “present” vote, as reported by the Associated Press.

The conversation about impeachment has intensified in recent months. Democratic California Representative Ro Khanna pledged on MSNBC to “impeach” Trump if the Democrats claim back the House. Similarly, New Jersey Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman expressed a commitment to this course at a town hall event in January.

However, not all Democrats are in agreement. Illinois Representative Brad Schneider, who chairs the center-left New Democratic Party, pointed out that without a two-thirds majority in the Senate, “the president cannot be removed from office.” Some associates of Jeffries, as indicated by CNN in January, deemed another impeachment effort a “waste of time,” while others close to party leadership cautioned that this could negatively impact the party’s prospects in 2028.

Ramirez suggested that Democrats should also consider pursuing the impeachment of former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and former Attorney General Pam Bondi, asserting, “These individuals should never hold office again.”
