Hurricanes’ Victory Over Senators Marred by Cheap Shot
The Carolina Hurricanes aimed for a win against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon, but the Sens were not backing down. In fact, they threw in a rather questionable move.
The Senators are known for their physical gameplay, which could be an asset in the postseason. Just look at the Florida Panthers, who achieved back-to-back Cup titles with this kind of approach.
That said, there are limits. Senators forward Ridley Greig crossed that line. Initially, he ramped up the game’s intensity by running into Carolina’s goaltender, Frederik Andersen, during Game 4. While that kind of play can happen in playoffs—particularly in elimination situations—it’s still a major penalty.
Things escalated later in the game. Greig, alongside teammate Warren Vogel, found himself in a tangle with Carolina’s Sean Walker. Vogel had Walker in a headlock while Greig, for whatever reason, decided to deliver a rather brutal uppercut.
Seriously, that was as dirty as it gets. Yet, surprisingly, only a few penalties were called; three were minor, with two handed to Carolina’s Nick DesLauriers. This meant Greig got off somewhat easy, although he might face suspension and a fine later.
Ultimately, the Senators lost 4-2, marking the end of their season. The Hurricanes will move on to face the winner of the Flyers-Penguins matchup, where Philadelphia could potentially win it all.
If the league does decide to suspend Greig, he might serve that penalty at the beginning of next season.
