Ex-Team USA gymnast Jennifer Sey describes WHCA Dinner shooting as 'frightening'

Incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Former Team USA gymnast Jennifer Sey attended the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, D.C., Saturday night when an unsettling event unfolded.

In a statement to FOX News Digital, Sey shared her experience, describing it as frightening. “It was meant to be a celebration of free speech. I walked in and saw protesters, which startled me. I thought it was all right at first, but I quickly realized I was wrong,” she recounted, noting she had to hide under a table for safety.

Jennifer Sey is well-known as a former elite gymnast, having won the 1986 USA Gymnastics National Championships. She was a member of the U.S. women’s national team seven times and, after recovering from a femur injury, took the top title in 1985. Her achievements also include competing in international events, where she secured commendable placements.

Beyond her athletic career, Sey founded XX-XY Athletics, a sportswear brand focused on activism, particularly in the Save Women’s Sports movement and broader conservative issues in recent years.

Meanwhile, chaos erupted at the event when gunfire was reported. Attendees scrambled for cover under tables as panic spread. Some reports suggest that the shots were fired from outside and that the suspected shooter was subsequently apprehended by the Secret Service. While security personnel quickly evacuated attendees, including President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, they were confirmed safe shortly after.

The precise cause of the incident remains uncertain, contributing to an atmosphere of confusion that night.
