President Donald Trump described a “terrible noise” and a “traumatic experience” for First Lady Melania Trump after an alleged gunman fired shots near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night.
At a press briefing over an hour post-incident, Trump noted that Melania was fully aware of the unfolding situation, emphasizing its impact on her.
He recounted that as the couple arrived at the Washington Hilton Hotel for the annual dinner, the first indication of trouble came from the sound of a falling dinner tray. Melania quickly sensed something was amiss, leading Trump to remark, “It’s a terrible noise.”
He highlighted Melania’s awareness of the risks tied to their roles. “The first lady was doing a great job. She loves this country. She knows this country better than anyone. But she reminded me often, ‘You have a dangerous job,'” he stated.
Secret Service agents apprehended the suspect, identified as Cole Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from Torrence, California, in the hotel lobby.
According to D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll, Allen was found in possession of a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives.
While it appears Allen acted alone, details regarding his motive and intended target remain unclear.
Surveillance footage captured him entering the hotel lobby and passing several Secret Service agents.
As the mayhem unfolded, Trump, Melania, Vice President J.D. Vance, and members of the Cabinet quickly exited the banquet hall.
In the commotion, journalists and other attendees sought refuge under tables while Trump and Melania left the stage in haste.
Trump mentioned that the officer was shot “at close range with a very high-powered firearm,” but fortunately survived due to his body armor and is currently in “good condition” at a local hospital.
