Far-Left Candidate’s Bold Housing Proposal
A left-leaning House candidate from New York, endorsed by Mayor Zoran Mamdani, has made some striking promises if she wins a Congressional seat. Claire Valdez, who is running for the open 7th Congressional District seat in Brooklyn and Queens, intends to “take buildings” from slum landlords and introduce rent control policies nationwide.
Valdez, representing the Democratic Socialists of America, introduced her ambitious housing plan on Thursday, taking aim at property owners and the real estate sector. She stated, “For decades, the federal government has enabled the real estate industry to profit immensely at the expense of working individuals.”
She articulated her stance by saying, “My housing platform serves New Yorkers who work hard to pay rent, not landlords who earn rent.” This might resonate with many people who feel the pressure of rising rental costs. Her strategy specifically asserts that people shouldn’t act like “kings of the slums” and suggests seizing properties from unethical landlords.
Her campaign argues that when landlords neglect building upkeep, the federal government should partner with tenants to transition these properties into community ownership. However, the plan lacks specifics on how she aims to enact her proposals on a larger scale, mirroring some ideas from Mamdani’s administration.
Valdez also proposed “universal rent control” and adjustments to the low-income housing tax credit, aiming for long-term stability in rental prices. “Rent control should not just apply to tenants in New York, but nationwide,” she insists.
Moreover, Valdez, a former union organizer, committed to fully funding federal housing voucher programs and introduced a plan for a national just-cause eviction law. This would ensure landlords cannot evict tenants without clear proof of lease violations.
Valdez stands as one of three DSA candidates supported by Mamdani, looking to challenge incumbent Democrats and other progressives in the upcoming primary on June 23. It’s interesting to note that Mamdani favored Valdez over Brooklyn Representative Antonio Reynoso, who chose not to take up the nomination of Rep. Nydia Velasquez for the seat.
