Gunshots Disrupt White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Gunfire erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, creating a scene of panic among attendees, many of whom have personal connections to political violence. President Donald Trump rushed out of the Washington Hilton ballroom amidst the chaos as the dinner began. Footage captured guests scrambling for safety, hiding under tables.

This incident held particular significance for several individuals in attendance, including Trump, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., House Minority Leader Steve Scalise, and Turning Point USA CEO Erica Kirk, all of whom have had their lives impacted by violence tied to politics.

During a press briefing later that night, Trump commented, “The people who have the greatest impact are shooters. They don’t go after people who haven’t done much, because they like it.” This statement was, perhaps, influenced by his own experiences with political threats.

Trump has faced two significant assassination attempts in 2024 alone. One of these near-fatal incidents occurred during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his ear. Trump recounted, “Butler had a weakness that we all know about,” suggesting a sniper was present—an alarming assertion, given the gravity of such situations.

Another incident transpired shortly after at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida, where a rifle-wielding suspect was apprehended. Fortunately, Trump emerged unscathed from that event.

Further adding to the tense atmosphere was Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose family history includes two tragic assassinations. His uncle, President John F. Kennedy, was killed during a motorcade on November 22, 1963, and his father, Robert, was assassinated after delivering a victory speech in 1968.

Steve Scalise also shared a terrifying connection to political violence, having survived being shot during a Congressional baseball practice in 2017. He has since expressed gratitude for the quick response from law enforcement during the Dinner event, stating, “This is an event that brings people together. Violence has no place in our country.”

Erica Kirk was visibly shaken and reportedly cried backstage after the incident. The weight of her own tragedy, having lost her husband in an assassination while he was speaking at a Turning Point USA event in 2025, added to the emotional gravity of the night.

In a later press conference, Trump recognized the exceptional efforts of law enforcement and noted, “The situation was handled incredibly by the Secret Service and law enforcement,” emphasizing their role as the first line of defense.

The suspected shooter, identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen from California, has been taken into custody, marking a very distressing evening for an event typically meant for celebration and camaraderie.
