Officer injured at the White House Correspondents' Dinner is 'doing well,' Trump states

President Trump announced that the Secret Service agent who was injured during the incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was in “very good condition.”

During a Saturday night press conference, he mentioned, “A police officer was shot, but he survived thanks to a strong bulletproof vest,” adding that the officer was receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

“He was shot at very close range with a powerful weapon, but the vest did its job. I spoke with the officers, and he’s doing well. In fact, he’s in great spirits,” Trump explained.

The officer was later released from the hospital, according to NBC.

Trump and First Lady Melania rushed out of the banquet hall alongside numerous officials after the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen, allegedly bypassed a security checkpoint and approached the event wielding two firearms and several knives, according to reports.

The shooting occurred approximately 20 minutes after Trump’s arrival at the packed event in the Washington Hilton, which hosted over 2,000 attendees.

Guests, including journalists, Cabinet members, and White House staff, scrambled for safety as shots were fired, with some ducking under tables and others fleeing toward exits.

Witnesses noted that panic ensued rapidly as Secret Service agents focused on the threat in the lobby outside the ballroom.

Trump commented on the gunman’s speed, saying, “He was fast. He charged from 50 yards away.” The suspect, a Caltech professor and Torrance, California resident, was quickly apprehended before he could enter the main banquet area.

Police suspect that Allen may have been residing at the hotel, known for hosting significant events every year.

Authorities are investigating how he managed to pass through security with weapons.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that the suspect faces multiple charges, including assault on a federal officer and two counts of assault with a firearm. He is expected to appear in federal court on Monday, with the possibility of additional charges as the investigation unfolds.

FBI agents and local police were seen at an address in Torrance connected to the shooter, indicating an ongoing investigation.

Aerial footage portrayed a substantial law enforcement presence at the site while evidence was collected.

President Trump commended law enforcement for their swift response to the situation, stating, “It was a great night in Washington, D.C., and the Secret Service acted bravely.” He added, “The shooter has been arrested, and, as I suggested, ‘let the show go on.’ He will be subject to complete law enforcement procedures.”
