Minocqua Brewing Company Gains Attention Over “Free Beer Day” Plans
A brewery in Wisconsin has made headlines again due to its recent Facebook post about an upcoming “free beer day.” The Minocqua Brewing Company, owned by Kirk Banstad, a Democratic figure who has run for state office, is known for its politically charged messaging surrounding Donald Trump.
The brewery’s social media expressed disappointment regarding an unsuccessful attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, saying, “Well, we almost got #freebeerday.” It’s unclear what exactly that meant in relation to the event, or if it referred to some kind of, uh, political maneuvering. Banstad has used the brewery’s platform for criticism of Trump and Republicans in the past.
“Either way, we’re ready to pour you free beer that day,” the post concluded, hinting at their ongoing political activism.
Banstad previously ran for the Wisconsin 34th Congressional District but lost in the general election after winning the primary. The Minocqua Brewing Company is noted not just for its beer, but also for selling merchandise that promotes its progressive stance, including shirts with slogans like “I wish it was a free beer day.”
In light of recent safety concerns, including shots fired at the WHCA banquet in Washington, the brewery’s controversial comments have drawn renewed scrutiny. Fox News noted how Banstad had previously welcomed celebrations for Trump’s anticipated death, mentioning a caveat of “No red hats.” He even started a super PAC aimed at opposing Trump and Republican candidates.
Criticism of Banstad intensified after an incident involving a harassment case, where he entered a no-contest plea for disorderly conduct. His comments have sparked reactions from various political figures, with some expressing concern over the rhetoric increasingly associated with political violence.
Republicans in Wisconsin, including the state party and the RNC, strongly condemned Banstad’s statements. RNC spokeswoman Delaney Bomer recently remarked that the Democrats’ approach to such matters seems dangerously flippant.
Overall, it seems the political climate continues to influence actions and statements from local businesses, leading to complex reactions from both supporters and opponents alike.
